Adult Student Scholarship in Honor of Linda Mead
This scholarship fund was created in Linda’s name to keep her spirit, legacy and passion for adult education alive in our memories and deeds.
About Linda
Linda was the first Adult Education Family Literacy teacher in the Family Tree Program at Mesa Public Schools. She later served as the district Adult Education and Family Literacy Director. In addition to her work with the school district, Linda taught part time at Chandler Gilbert Community College. In retirement, Linda was instrumental in creating a church-based adult school which continues to provide free classes in GED, ESL and Citizenship preparation.
People who knew her know how passionate she was about adult education and family literacy, and many were inspired by her dedication to help all adults reach their full potential. Her son, Rick Mead, describes Linda:
“Mom had to be a teacher. She often second guessed her profession of choice and the road that led her there, but there was no way she could not have been a teacher. Every second to mom was a teaching experience. Either she was being taught or was teaching others. There was no in-between. She always saw teaching as an adventure. Every culture—Every person—Every story—is an adventure.”
Linda was recognized with many honors throughout her career, but her two proudest were being chosen as a Community Hero and Olympic Torch Bearer in 1996, as the torch-run passed through Phoenix on its way to the Atlanta Olympics, and also being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award through the Arizona Department of Education and the Arizona Association for Lifelong Learning (AALL).

Eligibility
- Resident of Arizona
- Applicants are not required to be enrolled in an adult education program to apply.
- GED applicants show proof of readiness to pass the GED test by showing GED practice test scores indicating probability of a passing score on the GED subject test for which they are applying.
- Citizenship applicants who would like to use the fee toward classes or a passport show proof of class enrollment or the completed passport application.
- Applicants are willing to share their story as adult learners/citizenship applicants.
- Applicants will submit a paragraph (or more) explaining why they are pursuing their High School Equivalency or Citizenship.
- Citizenship applicants show proof of eligibility to apply for citizenship by completing the USCIS Naturalization Eligibility Worksheet (Form M-480 attached).

The Arizona Association for Lifelong Learning offers scholarships to members of up to $500 per year.
